Kobe wanted a low cut shoe for his next signature. These also have flywire technology embedded on the uppers and is a radically different looking silhouette from the rest of Nike Basketball's range.

There's no official design backstory or inspiration released for the KOBE IV yet but I'm going to take a solid shot at this:

When I first saw the shoes, the shaped seemed to call out some type of runner/cross-trainer. Then the soccer shoe influences stared to hit me.

Growing up, Kobe lived in Italy for a time and heavily played soccer. He still does in the offseason as an alternate training method. Kobe said in an interview once: "I'm comfortable [with basketball] footwork because I played soccer...from changing up rhythms to foot speed, to being comfortable with having my right foot as my pivot foot and my left foot as my pivot foot."

Especially noticeable on the first colorway, the cut of the shoe, the quilted pattern uppers, the lace style, and most prominently the replaced Kobe Sheath tongue logo which reads "CARPE DIEM". The tongue logo looks exactly like European Football (soccer) Club team crests. In fact, the logo on the Kobe IV is a dead ringer for this:
